brother 04:06
my brother died last winter he just faded away he found his self destruction west of liberty bay and if you'd have seen him it would've torn your heart he was aged and broken with a white lily in his hand my brother was a killer and he was a poet too he'd hurt you with a bullet but his words left fatal wounds and if you'd have seen him and lived to tell the tale your songs would ring through smoky nights and your scars would bleed with truths my brother was a sailor he saw the whole world through he had his share of lovers he left a broken hearted few and if you'd have seen him in your wine stained wedding dress and mourned the thought of distances you would have seen him at his best i've lost myself time devastates our dreams my brother was a sensitive man he was haunted all his life he couldn't stand the pain he'd caused but he just played his hand as dealt and if you'd have loved him like me you would have felt my sorrow you would cry the tears of salt that you tasted on my cheek

let her out 03:54
let her out of los angeles she's not pretty any more let her out of co. wicklow her knees are getting sore let her out of rio de janeiro she's got blood stains on her frock let her out of sierra leone she can't see the difference between a rebel and a soldier she just sees men with guns she can see the yellow of their teeth and the blood shot of their eyes let her out of hollywood she's charmed us all enough let her off her penance her back in broken and her flesh is torn let her out of prison she's swept too many floors let her leave her veil at home the sand storm has blown over what's the difference between a rebel and a soldier two men holding guns their eyes blood shot with hatred

wooden frame 05:59
i'm naked there's no blanket of love around me and this is my faith and i see you on your throne and i believe in you but your voice grows further away how could i ever live without the beat of your cane and i'm scarred and your presence is in me and i see you on your throne and i believe in you but your voice grows further away and i just take this pressure to be happy and this pleasure is mine can you tell me please who's the owner of my sadness and i see you on your throne and i believe in you but your voice grows further away these city lights pay their homage again to the births and to the deaths and to the carols that ring as we praise you on our knees and we raise you and your ghost disappears and i'll hang you in your wooden frame and i'll bathe in you and your blood is in vain and you're my god and you're my christ and you're darkness and you guide me and i see you on your throne and i believe in you but your voice grows further away

better world 05:01
what would it take to stop crying these tears of gold that flow like a stream through your heart to the clown of darkness and what would it take to believe that these dances through the streets and these colours painted on these walls are living breathing things and they're all dreaming of a better world of a better world what does it take to hate so much that it drives you out of your mind and you lose all sense of this world's reality and what would it take to love life a little more than death and to stand and to sketch upon the sky the reflection of your breath and we're still dreaming of a better world of a better world

as the moon lends us its light your mouth is trembling softly your breath is warm and your eyes are closed and I wonder what could scare you tell me of your last victim did he cry out in pain and did he scream for mercy when he saw blood in your eyes you're in my arms tonight your silence make me restless the angels will fall from grace for you and your story will go untold tell me of your last victim was it quick or slow and painful did you lick your lips and savour it did you feel pleasure or regret and in my room unspoken nights tobacco burns for candle light you give me love and paradise i run my fingers and cross your back tell me of your last victim were you out at sea or on dry land were you marching on to victory and tell me what will come of me you talk too much come closer now there is no past or future here there's only you and me and what could be better than us together and the things that we whisper and our secrets my lover the dawn is rising mournfully on your silver knife and on your golden words this one cuts through flesh and bone and this one cuts through hearts tell me of your last victim were his eyes as free as western skies did he kick and shout or go peacefully did he beg for life or just your sigh

happy song 05:58
sing me a happy song to ease my regrets sing me a verse or two so that i can forget sing it for my weary thoughts the tears i cried and my tired feet sing it for the words i sound and for the chords that i play wrong sing me a happy song to ease my regrets sing me a verse or two so that i can forget sing it for the lost generation and the teary eyes they leave behind sing it for the fun we've had and for the price that we're paying sing me a happy song to ease my regret sing me a verse or two so that i can forget sing it for the flowers we wore and for our years that have withered sing it for the cry that we were willing to raise and for the cause that we've forgotten sing us a happy song and don't forget all those major chords give it a simple melody and make it easy to sing along and then we'll sing sha la la la...

time passes by it wounds you to the heart it marks and it decays and it scars voices sing in chorus with the wind this picture is black and white and it's torn at the edge and your footprint is made as the constellations play and the cards you draw are wild as are the written words you pray i see your sunken eyes and your waning smile and the sphere that goes unchanged to your fragmented sight i lit a perfumed candle it burned slowly to a stub and when its light went out its incense filled the room and your footprint is made as the constellations play and the cards you draw are wild as are the written words you pray this room is my resting place eternity is my cage a lost and minor note emerges from the strings its tune will lift the chorus through the night the symphony the cry the howl the tear that dries and your footprint is made as the constellations play and the cards you draw are wild as are the written words you pray time passes by it wounds you to the heart it marks and it decays and it scars

towers fall 02:28
when all these towers fall and the dust has come to rest and all these pages are torn and your voices claim the breeze will your victory will your victory be sweet when all your scriptures burn and their ashes float to heaven and your empty spirit dances on the ruins of your kingdom will your victory will your victory be sweet

the stall 03:45
when the last light went off on me i was left stood in the dark i stayed there till dawn with the wind's lonely song i won't back down just yet i'll be by the stall till they drag me away leave a thought if you're passing through i always said i would be and look at me now i was the last to leave some poor homeless kid pulled a lamp from the dirt then he smiled like a little child and the rats sniffed the air the cold is coming now you'd be better to find somewhere to hide they're closing me down my time is running short i'll be stood by the arcade wall i always said i would be and look at me now i was the last to leave i used to be a man of prayer but for me things have changed i don't think like that anymore i don't think there's a plan or a right way to be there's just greed and there's all that you can grab and the birds have flown south and the spring has turned to stone and the bloom is just a fading thought i always said i would be and look at me now i was the last to leave

about

The Irish singer-songwriter's second album offers a cutting deconstruction of the subtle taboos in today's society. Its sound is dark, and more suggestively experimental than his debut, but it's still a very acoustic record at its core.

“[The] confident acceptance of silence between beats is a powerful statement of intent”
-Bernard O’Rourke, Golden Plec

“It’s been a very long time since I’ve been gripped by an album so intense, delicate and sublime as ‘Blasphemy’ by Dubliner Alan Doyle”
-Peter Nagle, 2 U I Bestow
